an e-story~~

something amazing i came across while surfing http://www.random-good-stuff.com : the following passage was taken from a book called ‘Gadsby’, which is an interesting story containing 50,000 words WITHOUT THE LETTER ‘E’ !!! interesting concept there by the author, Ernest Vincent Wright.

Up to about its primary school days a child thinks, naturally, only of play. But many a form of play contains disciplinary factors. “You can’t do this,” or “that puts you out,” shows a child that it must think, practically or fail. Now, if, throughout childhood, a brain has no opposition, it is plain that it will attain a position of “status quo,” as with our ordinary animals. Man knows not why a cow, dog or lion was not born with a brain on a par with ours; why such animals cannot add, subtract, or obtain from books and schooling, that paramount position which Man holds today.

just do it~~

odex owns~~

ODEX recently created lots of hoo-haa among the anime scene in singapore when they started their plans of ‘catching’ illegal anime downloaders by tapping the users’ internet connection. this was legally done using a court order which forced starhub and singnet to release a namelist of subscribers who are allegedly ‘guilty’ of downloading licensed animes. (what kind of crap is this!)

furthermore, the downloaders were fined from S$3k to S$5 each, which accumulated to up to S$3m of funds for ODEX (so what did they use this cash for? and how is this going to be reported in their financial statements?) what can i say? its just a cheap way which pleases the government and at the same time destroyed their own reputation among real anime fans. i wonder how sustainable their plans are? i bet they didnt expect such a public outrage. (or perhaps heck care?)

and, so how good is their quality of their vcds (ya.. their products are mainly STILL in vcd format) and seriously what value-added services do they actually do besides being sole distributors?

compare these 2 images of a scene in Initial D

Comparison of Odex subtitles with fan-made ones.

so what is the ‘big tree’?

and also, the time taken for them to bring in new animes ranges from 1 – 6 mths, whereas anime downloaders get them from within 2-4 days from the date of AIRING(free telecast) in japan, WITH ENGLISH SUBS!!!

seriously, what can they do? besides catching people and generating cash from them, they should have placed more effort in improving their marketability of their products! what a cheap way of doing business…

hang on!

glacier surfing

Hawaii tow-in surfing team Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala have just returned from Alaska where they became the first – and possibly last – surfers to successfully ride glacier- generated tsunami waves of up to 25 feet. Their tsunami surfing experience took place at Child’s Glacier on the Copper River, in South-Central Alaska, located near the town of Cordova, Alaska.

Sheer ice faces of over 400 feet calved away from Child’s Glacier, crashing into the waters below and setting off left- and right-breaking waves that peeled across a pebble-bottom river bank for more than 300 yards, offering rides of up to one minute long. In order to catch them, the surfers would wait up to several hours in the icy water for a glacier to fall, then chase down the ensuing wave on their jetski and attempt to ride with being injured or killed by ice and rock debris.

The largest wave Garrett rode was a 15-foot face. Keali’i rode a 20- to 25-foot wave. The most memorable and unnerving moments came when the glacier calve “booked”, or fell like a book off a shelf, landing flat on the surface of water, causing a deafening eruption of water and ice to explode into the air, and forcing them to make a run for their lives with the assistance of their jetski.

“This has changed our outlook on big-wave surfing. In this case, we didn’t even need a huge wave to get a rush. It was the heaviest rush just sitting out there, dwarfed by this enormous glacier face, waiting for the whole thing to crash down in front of us and hoping we’d survive it when it did.”

As to the future of this new surfing spin-off? Perhaps take heed of what Garrett, one of the world’s most daring surfers has to say: “I wouldn’t recommend it for any one. I won’t be going back. This is not a new sport.”

live with courage~~

“Courage…is nothing less than the power to overcome
danger, misfortune, fear, injustice, while continuing to affirm inwardly that life with all its sorrows is good; that everything is meaningful even if in a sense beyond our understanding; and that there is always tomorrow.”

by Dorothy Thompson

.

saw this interesting quote on my fren’s msn nick…

i guess everyone faces these problems of misfortune, injustice and bad times. and it all boils down to how the individual handles these problems thru their own perspective; one can choose to curse and swear at how tough is it living thru a life full of bumps rather than a smooth ride, OR choose to take every single obstacle positively as a challenge towards their character building, self-esteem and self-confidence.

well, i think what im missing in life is my courage…

what have i done (to the world)?

[Linkin Park – WhatI’ve Done]

im not a big fan of linkin park, however, the images of this MV left a huge impact in me…
